SOCIAL JUSTICE: REPARATIONS & EQUITY

These times have highlighted the gross inequities in access to healthcare and supplementary healthcare, especially for historically marginalized and racialized communities; Indigenous, Black, Latino, Asian, South Asian, and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. With this in mind, as a white-owned and run healing arts business in a predominantly white New England town, Back to Heart Center aims to do our small part in contributing to the pressing need, not only for racial equity and inclusion, but also for reparations for past and continuing harm resulting from generations of colonialism, violence, systemic racism, and its economic impact.

We acknowledge that we work here on stolen land.

If you’re new to the concept and practice of Reparations, this article is a good starting point.

Additionally, we choose to align with the 8 Dimensions Model of Wellness. In this model, concepts of wellness extend far beyond our industry’s limited definition,  which tend to be confined to physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness only. The 8 Dimensions model extends to include social wellness, intellectual wellness, environmental wellness, vocational wellness, and financial wellness.

In this spirit, and with the knowledge that we will stumble as we strive to uncover and unlearn our inherited, implicit biases, Back to Heart Center and its practitioners offer pay-what-you-will pricing, opportunity for exchange of services, and bartering for local Black and Indigenous clients, with no questions asked. In addition, we acknowledge the ongoing harm of America’s culture of white supremacy to Latino, Asian, and South Asian peoples – and all others existing outside of the privilege of whiteness, and make accessible our services to our local, diasporic communities in the same way. Additionally, as a part of our commitment to anti-violence work, we offer survivors of domestic and sexual violence this same opportunity, regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation through our ongoing partnership with The Elizabeth Freeman Center

It is our genuine desire that the services we offer be accessible to all who would like to benefit from them.

The system of Reiki is inherently inclusive. Originating in Japan, Reiki has Buddhist roots but it is not a religion, nor is it affiliated with any religion or dogma. The Reiki system is and was created to be intentionally secular and to exist and proliferate outside of organized, religious institutions. The system and practice of Reiki acknowledges and works with the connective, universal energy that unites all things and all beings.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this statement, it is evolving — as we are — so please don’t hesitate to reach out. We welcome discussion around these vital issues as a part of our continued learning and heartfelt desire to participate in collective liberation.
